What Is Rainbow Moonstone?

There is an important gemological detail behind the name.

In the gemstone trade, Rainbow Moonstone is widely used for a transparent-to-translucent variety of Labradorite, a plagioclase feldspar. GIA specifically notes that rainbow moonstone is technically not classic orthoclase Moonstone, but is accepted in the trade as a gemstone in its own right because of its beautiful moonstone-like sheen.

This distinction is useful because it explains the exceptionally vivid flash seen in these pendants.

The colours are produced by light interacting with internal structures within the feldspar, creating an optical effect known as adularescence. GIA describes this as a glow that appears to billow or move across the surface as the viewing angle changes.

The Physical Character of Rainbow Moonstone

The term Rainbow Moonstone in the trade commonly refers to labradorite, a feldspar mineral related to classic Moonstone.

Moonstone-family material generally falls around 6–6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale and has relatively poor toughness and cleavage, so it can chip or fracture when struck.
