Gemological and mineral-collecting sources indicate that the honeycomb-patterned Ruby material commonly sold under this name is generally lab-created or manufactured Ruby/corundum material, rather than a naturally occurring mineral variety called “Honeycomb Ruby.” The Gemological Institute of America has also documented synthetic Ruby exhibiting an unusual honeycomb-like fracture pattern in certain treated materials.

The material itself can still be Ruby/corundum, but the honeycomb structure should not be represented as a naturally occurring Ruby crystal habit.

That distinction is important for an honest product listing.

For this reason, we retain the established commercial product name “Honeycomb Ruby,” while not describing the honeycomb texture as a naturally occurring Ruby crystal formation.

The Ruby Material

Ruby is the red variety of the mineral Corundum, composed primarily of aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃). Its characteristic red colour comes principally from trace chromium within the corundum structure. Corundum has an exceptional Mohs hardness of 9, second only to diamond among naturally occurring minerals.

Natural Ruby can range from orangey-red through purplish-red, while chromium concentration influences the colour intensity.

The material used in Honeycomb Ruby products is particularly recognisable for its unusual cellular or honeycomb-like visual texture, which gives the wings a highly sculptural appearance. Ruby also has a vitreous to adamantine lustre when suitably polished and is generally transparent to translucent in gem-quality material, although Ruby-containing materials can be much more opaque and textural.
